F1's Long-Term Strategy Takes Flight with SAF Investment
Formula 1 has made its first investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through its Global Partner, DHL, as part of its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2030.
The investment's first phase started in March 2024, using SAF for air cargo transport to and from flyaway races, beginning with the Australian Grand Prix, and it currently encompasses around 20% of F1's cargo flights for the season.
During the 2024 season, the switch to SAF is expected to result in an 80% reduction in carbon emissions per flight and is projected to save over 4,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) compared to traditional aviation fuel.
Since Formula 1 is purchasing SAF through DHL through a "book and claim" system, the SAF isn't directly used in F1's cargo flights but is added to the fuel supply chain where sustainable fuel is available. While it is still indirect, the approach supports immediate emission reduction and paves the way for the growth of the SAF market to achieve future goals.
Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, said: "Formula 1 has always been at the forefront of innovation, and our early-stage investment in sustainable aviation fuel is a testament to our dedication to deliver on our net zero by 2030 commitment. SAF is just the latest step for the business, and underscores how alternative fuels both on and off track can materially reduce carbon emissions. This delivery of our sustainability strategy is only made possible through coordinated actions across our sport."
Paul Fowler, Head of Motorsports Logistics, DHL, added: "Our longstanding partnership with Formula 1 is built on a shared passion for innovation and excellence. We are committed to using our expertise to transport Formula 1's cars and equipment around the world in the most efficient way possible. With 40 years of expertise in motorsports logistics, we are focused on cutting down greenhouse gas emissions and making motorsport more sustainable with every step we take."
In addition to investing in SAF, Formula 1, in partnership with DHL, utilized biofuel-powered trucks during the nine European Grands Prix, resulting in an average 83% reduction in emissions compared to traditionally fuelled trucks in 2023.
Brookfield Aviation International believes that Formula 1's investment in SAF marks a significant stride towards achieving its goal of net zero emissions by 2030 and sets a precedent for other industries to follow suit.
